Run Each Prompt Multiple Times Generation involves randomness and retrieval can return different pages between runs, so a single answer is a sample. Three runs per prompt is the practical minimum and five is better where the stakes are high.

The fix is not abandoning modern frameworks. Server side rendering or static generation produces the same interface with meaningful content in the initial response, and it is faster for humans too, which is the usual pattern in this area.

You also cannot cleanly attribute a purchase to a recommendation the buyer received three weeks earlier in a conversation you never saw. That influence is real, it is often the main value of the channel, and it will not appear in any report you own.

The practical conclusion is unexciting and reliable. Do the work that pays off under multiple scenarios, keep measuring, and treat any strategy that requires one channel's terms to stay fixed as a bet rather than a plan. structured data for ai search

So attribute it by name every time it appears in a report. A visibility figure presented without saying which tool produced it and how it was sampled will eventually be quoted back at you as fact by somebody who did not know it was an estimate, and that is a difficult correction to make in front of a board. structured data for ai search

That arrangement has been coming apart in stages, and the current stage is the one that changes the economics. It is worth understanding as a sequence rather than as a sudden event, because the sequence explains what is likely to happen next. structured data for ai search

This is also where the most common own goal happens. A byline naming somebody who exists nowhere else is weaker than no byline at all, because it introduces a claim with nothing behind it. If you are going to name people, make sure they can be found.

Repeat it quarterly. Identity work has slow feedback, because scattered mentions have to be re-crawled before they join up, and the temptation to abandon it after a month is strong. It is usually the change that unlocks everything else. If you adjust it between runs you are measuring your own edits, and any trend line you draw afterwards is meaningless.

The second is content behind interaction. Accordions, tabs and modals are good interface patterns and their content is sometimes absent from the initial response. Check whether yours is present in the HTML even when collapsed, which is usually a configuration question rather than a design one.

Ahrefs measured this in July 2025 across 15,000 long-tail prompts and four assistants, finding roughly 80 percent of cited pages did not rank for the original query, with about 12 percent in the top ten. The overlap is real but partial, which is the worst case for planning: you cannot ignore your rankings and you cannot rely on them either.

How to Tell If It Is Working Ask an assistant directly who your company is, in a signed out session, and read what comes back. You are checking three things: whether the facts are right, whether it hedges, and whether it confuses you with anybody.

Report frequency rather than presence. Being named in one run out of five is a genuinely different situation from being named in five out of five, and a report that collapses both to mentioned has thrown away the useful part.

What Has Not Changed It is worth being clear about the continuities, because the change is regularly oversold. Organic search still delivers the larger share of traffic for most businesses. Crawlable, fast, well structured sites still win. Content that genuinely answers a question still outperforms content that does not.

Which Publications Actually Get Cited Do not assume, and do not use prestige as a proxy. Run ten prompts in your category and count the cited domains, because the pattern varies enormously by industry.

It also means the wording of the coverage matters in a way it previously did not. A sentence describing what you do, for whom, in what geography, is directly usable. A sentence that mentions your name in a list of attendees is not.

For roughly twenty years the arrangement was stable enough that an entire industry could be built on it. You typed a query, you got a ranked list, you formed your own opinion by comparing a few of the results, and businesses competed for position in that list.

Where Analytics Can and Cannot Help Referral traffic from assistant domains does show up in analytics, and it is worth segmenting into its own report. Treat the numbers as a floor rather than a count, since some assistants strip referrer information and some traffic arrives looking direct.

A false trade off gets invented early in most of these projects. Somebody proposes stripping the design, flattening the copy and restructuring everything around what a crawler finds convenient, and somebody else correctly points out that this would make the site worse for customers.
