The Blocks Nobody Chose Most blocking discovered during audits was never a decision. A disallow copied from a template. A staging rule that survived a migration. A security plugin with an aggressive default. A content delivery network setting labelled bot protection with a switch nobody has looked at since launch.

Anything a client cannot argue with is not a report. If you cannot open the document, disagree with a conclusion and point at the evidence that contradicts it, you have been sent a reassurance rather than an analysis.

Press coverage spent two decades being valued in this industry mainly for the links it carried. That was always a reductive way to think about it, and it has now become an actively misleading one, because the mechanism that gives coverage its value here has nothing to do with links at all.

The complication is that AI systems use several distinct agents for different purposes. One may crawl for training corpora, another may fetch pages live when composing an answer, and a search provider's traditional crawler may feed both search results and an AI summary.

The pages that earn citations are consistent across industries: an honest comparison of the options including where you are not the right choice, a plain definition page for the thing you sell, a specifications page with real numbers, and a pricing page that says something concrete.

Two wrong answers circulate about how long this takes. One says a few weeks, which sells engagements and then disappoints. The other says a year or more, which is used to defer starting and to excuse a lack of movement halfway through.

The output is a spreadsheet and it is the most important document in the project. It tells you whether you are named, whether what is said about you is true, who is named instead, and which pages your category's answers are actually built from.

Ask to See a Prompt Set The first question is the most revealing. Ask them to show you the prompt set from a current or recent client, with the client's name removed. A team doing real work has this and will show it, because the prompts are craft rather than secret sauce.

Existing reputation helps disproportionately. A brand with review volume, press history and consistent details is starting from a partly assembled record. A brand with none of that is building identity from scratch, and identity work is slow because it depends on re-crawling sources you do not control.

It is also worth recording the reason for every rule you keep. A disallow line with no explanation gets preserved indefinitely through migrations and redesigns because nobody dares remove something they do not understand. A one line comment saying who added it and why turns a permanent mystery into a decision that can be revisited.

It is also worth being clear with yourself about what would make you stop. Businesses rarely cancel marketing programmes because the results are bad, they cancel them because attention moved elsewhere, which means good programmes get dropped and poor ones survive on inertia. Writing down the review date and the criteria at the start is a small discipline that mostly protects you from your own future distraction.

Days Thirty to Sixty: Correct the Record Take the ranked list of cited sources from phase one and go through it. On each source, check whether you appear, whether the details are right and whether the platform accepts corrections.

This is the least interesting subject in the discipline and the one that most often explains a total absence from generated answers. A brand can do everything else correctly and remain invisible because a line in a text file, or a setting nobody remembers enabling, is turning the relevant crawlers away.

This entire area usually amounts to a day of work. It is routinely the difference between a brand that appears in answers and one that does not, and it is worth doing before anybody writes a single word of new content. [https://www.88pianists.com/ answer engine optimization]

Being named in answers to prompts with buying intent, as opposed to definitional prompts nobody purchases from. Being described accurately, since a confident recommendation containing a wrong price or a service you discontinued costs more than absence. And being cited on the third party sources that appear repeatedly in your category's answers.

Weeks: Your Own Pages A rewritten page that answers a question directly can be retrieved and cited within weeks, sometimes faster. Freshness carries real weight here because retrieval is live, so a page updated this month competes on current terms rather than waiting to accumulate authority.

Days Fifteen to Thirty: Fix the Plumbing Someone technical checks that the crawlers feeding AI systems can reach your site, that your bot protection is not silently blocking them, and that your important pages contain real content without JavaScript running.

Days, Not Months: Access Anything that unblocks retrieval can show up almost immediately, because most assistants fetch pages at answer time rather than relying on a slow index refresh. Removing a disallow rule, fixing a bot management setting that was challenging legitimate agents, or making key content render without JavaScript can change what a system sees within days.
