Days One to Fourteen: Find Out Where You Stand Somebody writes fifty questions your buyers would ask, in their words. They run each one three times across the two or three assistants your customers use, from a signed out session, and record the full answers and every source cited.

What a Defensible Business Case Looks Like It states what cannot be measured. It reports inputs completed, with counts. It reports prompt set movement as fractions with visible run counts, split by intent. It includes the soft signals as anecdote clearly labelled as anecdote. It attributes every external statistic.

The sustainable version is small and continuous: the prompt set run monthly, listings checked quarterly, a handful of pages updated rather than a burst of new ones, and someone who owns it. That costs less over a year than the three month push and holds its ground. answer engine optimization

A frequently quoted comparison showing assistant referrals converting several times better than search came from a vendor selling the service, across 312 business to business brands. A widely shared claim about explosive referral growth rested on nineteen analytics properties. Both are legitimate observations and neither supports the confident generalisation usually attached to them.

The output is a spreadsheet and it is the most important document in the project. It tells you whether you are named, whether what is said about you is true, who is named instead, and which pages your category's answers are actually built from.

Why That Breaks the Old Playbook The old playbook assumed that if you occupied a high position, you got the visit. That link between position and visibility has weakened. Ahrefs looked at 15,000 long-tail prompts across four assistants in July 2025 and found roughly 80 percent of the cited pages did not rank for the original query at all.

How to Judge It at Day Ninety Re-run the original fifty prompts, the same number of times, under the same conditions. Compare against the baseline on three measures: how often you are named, whether the description of you is accurate, and which sources are being cited.

Insist on the raw answers. If a report cannot be disagreed with, it is not a report. This single requirement filters out most of the weak offerings in the market without needing any technical knowledge.

One thing worth measuring separately is how recent your reviews are relative to your competitors on the same platform. Volume comparisons are the usual instinct and recency is the more informative one, because a profile with steady recent activity describes a business as it operates now while a larger historic total describes one that used to be busy.

In most categories the pages that generate answers are review platforms, directories, forum threads, comparison articles and trade publications. Being absent or wrong on those explains far more absences than anything on a brand's own site, and correcting a listing costs an afternoon.

A Numeric Name Is an Entity Problem Names beginning with digits behave differently across the web than names beginning with letters. They get written several ways, they sort strangely in directories, and they collide with unrelated numeric strings in ways that letter based names do not.

Prioritise by your own citation data rather than by prestige. A trade directory nobody has heard of that appears in half your category's answers is worth more attention than a well known publication that never gets cited. [https://www.88pianists.com/ answer engine optimization]

88 Pianists documents an engineering outreach project in which eighty eight pianists played a single piano at once, a collaboration between universities and schools. It is small, single topic, and carries a name that begins with a number.

Days Thirty to Sixty: Correct the Record Take the ranked list of cited sources from phase one and go through it. On each source, check whether you appear, whether the details are right and whether the platform accepts corrections.

Now a growing share of those questions produce an answer instead of a list. The assistant reads the sources, forms the opinion and hands you a recommendation. The comparison step that used to happen in the buyer's head now happens inside a model, using sources the buyer never sees.

This is usually a few days of work, it frequently explains a poor baseline entirely, and it improves conventional search as a side effect. It is the cheapest part of the whole exercise and the most commonly skipped.

The condition is that it has to be honest. A comparison where every row favours you is transparent to readers and produces nothing quotable as an impartial claim. Name real competitors, use concrete axes, and state plainly where somebody else is the better choice.

Statistics without sources. This field circulates figures faster than it checks them, and a number arriving without a publisher, a sample size and a date should be discounted rather than repeated to your board.

Then listen for language. When prospects begin describing your business using phrasing you did not write and your competitors do not use, that phrasing came from somewhere, and generated answers are an increasingly likely source. It is anecdotal, it is not a number, and it is often the earliest indication that anything is working.
